- Much like a flashlight, light is emitted in a cone outward from the front of the MVP. At ~2-3’ distance, the cone extends up to 6’ in diameter for both the MVP and MVP-Pro.
- In a static environment (where the air isn’t moving), inactivation rates for different pathogens at different distances, times, intensity of light, humidity and other environmental conditions are available from Columbia University and others as shown above and below. The air we live in, however, is often moving for a variety of reasons (e.g. in-room ventilation, someone walking into the room, etc) and in highly variable and unpredictable ways, which largely prevents reliable estimates of pathogen reduction. The science around near-field protection efficacy is evolving rapidly and we aim to continue to lead and report out on the research and development – we are thrilled to be at the center of improving indoor air quality and at the forefront of this innovation with our customers and our academic institutional partners in research and development. Some researchers and marketers may use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to try to assess product performance in application. While we did this several years back when we started UV simulations and the resulting gifs can sometimes provide some very interesting visual representations, the variability of airflows in real world occupied applications (walking, turning heads, speaking versus breathing variability between people etc) are almost entirely unpredictable and vary so much that they are largely not considered scientific proof as the inputs can highly skew the analyses. If purely comparing two different powers and leaving all of the other assumptions static, the higher powered device should provide greater protection. The downside of higher powers though, particularly in a handheld unit, are that they intrinsically require greater fault control through more restrictive (longer length) LiDAR settings which can make the product use more challenging in application. Our products are designed to provide the most power possible without exceeding safety thresholds and still be usable in most applications (such as eating at a restaurant or traveling in a plane).
- According to a recent Columbia University Study, 0.19 mJ of light from a Far UV source can inactivate 90% of airborne SARS-CoV-2. The inactivation of 90% of SARS-CoV-2 could therefore be achieved within 48 seconds with 4 microwatts of Far UV.
- Just like a regular lightbulb, if you position UV light too close to your eyes and skin and/or for too long, it can cause irritation. UV light irritation to eyes and skin can often be delayed hours (similar to the delay in wind exposure to skin and eyes). Our devices are engineered to provide the most UV light power out without exceeding the recommended Threshold Limit Values for exposure as set by the American Council of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). This is why we find it so important that our MVP and MVP-Pro products utilize the same dual smart sensing LiDAR as the MVP to ensure that no user can be overexposed, including pets and children. This provides for a safer and more comfortable user experience, making the MVP and MVP-Pro the safest mobile UV products on the market for your family. While UL does not currently have a standard for handheld Far UV devices, we do not believe any devices without our redundant LiDAR or similar sensing would ever be certified. As a former participant in the UL committees on UV device safety, we proactively added these important safety features to both our MVP and MVP Pro. Without this critical feature, a handheld Far UVC device could easily exceed the exposure thresholds. We hope new entrants to the market will also follow suit in proactively protecting their customers.
- The MVP and MVP-Pro utilize a 3W bulb to provide Far UV light.
- The cone of the MVP or MVP-Pro can be directed to maximize the coverage between people, specifically within their respiratory zones. We believe an ideal position would be on a table or an airplane tray facing upwards when seated.
- Far UV Technologies does not sell battery packs but the same ones that can recharge your phone or other applications can also be used to extend the charge for your MVP or MVP-Pro.
- If you are willing to utilize a battery pack you can achieve both higher intensity and long battery life with the MVP-Pro. Having said that, the MVP has 5+ hours of battery life in a stand-alone setting and remains a highly viable option for users who seek longest battery life (without a battery pack) as their priority.
